Bees

Carpenter Bees

Color: Blue-black, green or purple metallic sheen on abdomen.

Carpenter bees look like typical bumblebees but often lack yellow stripes. They are solitary bees unlike bumble bees. Female carpenter bees will chew a tunnel into a piece of wood to build her nest. Male carpenter bees guard the outside of the nest and can not sting although his constant buzzing can seem alarming. They bore through soft woods to lay eggs and keep larvae protected.

Bald- Faced Hornets

Color: Black with a white pattern on most of the face.

This atypically large black and white bee is a relative of the yellow jacket and is named a hornet because of its large size (1/2-3/4”) and aerial nest. They live in colonies typically 100-400 members at its largest and usually are seen in late summer. They build paper nests at at least 3 feet off the ground usually in trees, shrubs, on overhangs, houses, sheds, or other structures. They are aggressive and will attack anything that invades their space. They have smooth stingers which allows them to be able to sting repetitively. Their venom makes the sting painful, itchy, and often swollen for about 24 hours.

Yellow Jackets

Color: Abdomen usually black and yellow pattered in a band like shape.

There are several species of these striped like patterned yellow jackets. They nest in the ground or in cave like areas like eaves or attics. They feed on sweets and proteins and commonly invade outdoor activities. Often found near a recycling bin or other areas where sugars or proteins are found. They become more aggressive during autumn when the colony begins to die out except for the queen. They are capable of stinging rapidly and can cause allergic reactions. Stinging insects send over 500,000 people to the ER each year.

Paper Wasps

Color: Brownish with yellow markings.

Paper wasps get their name from the paper-like material they make their nests of. The live in small colonies and eat nectar and other insects like caterpillars and flies. Their paper-like comb nests hang from branches of trees, shrubs, porch ceilings, the tops of window and door frames, eaves, attic rafters, deck floor joists, and railings. In the fall they may find their way indoors seeking a place to spend the winter especially if tall ceilings are present. They are not aggressive by nature but will sting if they are disturbed or threatened.

Honey Bees

Color: Predominantly golden/ yellow with brown bans.

Honey bees are extremely important due to their beneficial role in pollination. They are active pollinators and produce honey in honeycombs in their nests. They often build their nests in tree crevices, but occasionally build nests in attics or chimneys. They can sting but they only sting once. Honey bee’s is something that we do not kill due to their environmental importance. However we do have a list of bee keepers on file that would be able to remove honey bees from a property.

PCI offers both nest elimination and removal as well as preventive treatments of everything except honey bees. However we have a list of bee collectors that are happy to remove honey bee’s. Call us today to preventive bee activity from occurring at your home or place of business!
